Microsoft’s March 8 update confirmed a worrying evolution in a campaign first disclosed in January: a Russian state‑linked actor known as Midnight Blizzard has moved from harvesting corporate email to gaining access to some of Microsoft’s source code repositories and internal systems.

Those same techniques are precisely what enable supply chain compromise when vendor email, build environments, or artifact repositories are exposed.
So what should the DoD do now, beyond framing the Microsoft incident as a reminder of the obvious? The answer is that the DoD must assume compromise is a credible baseline and harden the entire software supply chain accordingly. Below are prioritized, actionable controls and policy moves that should be adopted across DoD programs and by cleared contractors.
1) Treat source code and build systems as crown jewels
